New information system

On Tuesday, 23 March the Council will be moving to its new information system, MedSYS.

This requires us to move existing information from our old information system to MedSYS. We're anticipating because of the vast amount of data to be electronically moved, that it will take 3-4 working days to complete the work.

During this time we expect to be able to respond to email and telephone queries as usual. We plan to have MedSys up and running the week beginning Monday, 29 March.

Our staff have been working hard to minimise any interruptions to our stakeholders. We would ask for your patience and understanding should we experience any unanticipated problems and while we get used to the new system.

If you have any questions about the implementation of our new information system please use the online contact form.  Further updates will be provided on our website.

Scopes of practice and prescribed qualifications

The Medical Council has recently updated and gazetted its scopes of practice and prescribed qualifications. The gazette notice sets out the Council's requirements for different scopes of practice and the qualifications needed for each.

Reduced period of supervision for provisional general registration period

One change in the gazette notice is a reduced period of supervision for doctors registered within a provisional general scope of practice in the competent authority and comparable health system pathways. This change will not affect New Zealand graduates or NZREX doctors who will still need to complete their internships.

Council staff over the next three months will contact all affected doctors.

We are expecting to receive hundreds of applications for a change from provisional general to general scope over the next three months. Please accept our apologises if we are not able to process these applications within 20 working days.

Special purpose scope of practice in teleradiology

The Council will be accepting applications for registration in a special purpose scope of practice in teleradiology from Thursday, 1 April 2010.

Please email the Council at registration@mcnz.org.nz if you have any questions.
