Notifiable blood lead levels

The notifiable blood lead level has been lowered as of 3 September 2007.  The Infectious and Notifiable Diseases Order 2007 has been made to amend Schedule 2 Section B of the Health Act 1956 in order to lower the non-occupational notifiable blood lead level from 15μg/dL to 10 mg/dL or 0.48 μmol/L.  To read the full article click here.

The importance of accurate death certification

The completion of a medical certificate of causes of death is much more than just an administrative task performed to meet a bureaucratic requirement. Causes of death are collated into mortality statistics that are widely used for many different purposes, both within New Zealand and internationally.  For the full article, click here.

New health service for dioxin exposed people

The Ministry of Health will implement a new prevention-focused health support service for people exposed to dioxin from the former Ivon Watkins Dow (IWD) agrichemicals plant in Paritutu, New Plymouth.  From 1 July 2008, people living in Taranaki will be able to access a comprehensive annual health check-up from their usual primary care team.  Patients can be referred to other health services including smoking cessation, physical activity and nutrition support, primary mental health care, or genetic counselling.  Serum dioxin testing is available under limited circumstances.  These services will be available to eligible individuals in other parts of New Zealand by 1 October 2008.

To use this service, individuals must apply to the Ministry of Health to have their eligibility assessed.  Eligibility assessment for all of New Zealand opens on 1 July 2008.  Eligibility depends on where they lived or worked in relation to the IWD factory, and for how long.  Applicants are asked to identify their doctor, practice, or PHO on the application form.  Eligible people will be given a letter of eligibility confirmation.  This letter and direct contact from the Ministry of Health will enable you to identify who is eligible for the service.  The Ministry will also provide you with specific information about the service and a claim form when one of your patients is assessed as eligible.  Because this is a new service, general practitioners will be able to claim a fee-for-service for each annual health check-up delivered.

More information about the health support service including guidance on the content of the health check-up is available at www.moh.govt.nz/dioxins.  Patients can get an application form on-line from the Ministry of Health or by telephoning 0800 288 588.

Birth, Deaths and Marriages

Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) remind all doctors to fill out the details on the Medical Certificate of Causes of Death completely and legibly so as to help bereaved families and other organisations who rely on the information.

In particular:

·         the place of death is not always fully completed, with the town or city left blank

·         the handwriting is often difficult to read

·         the causes of death are often described using abbreviations which are difficult for
          the family to understand.

Information on the Medical Certificate of Causes of Death appears on Death Certificates subsequently issued by BDM.

"Insurance companies and other agencies make important decisions based on the information on Death Certificates. BDM also supplies

Statistics New Zealand with death information, which is used for research and demographic analysis,” says Registrar-General Brian Clarke.
