The Council’s handbook Orientation, Induction and Supervision for International Medical Graduates – Best practice guidelines for employers and supervisors of international medical graduates sets out the roles and responsibilities of international medical graduates (IMGs) coming to work in New Zealand, and their employers and supervisors.
Part A of the handbook discusses orientation and induction processes, from preparation and recruitment through to starting work and following up in subsequent months.
Part B deals with supervision requirements for international medical graduates, who gain registration to work in New Zealand.
Orientation is an introduction and overview to medical practice in New Zealand.
Induction is the familiarisation of systems and processes of the worksite and the individual service of departments.

Supervision means the monitoring of, and reporting on, the performance of a medical practitioner by a professional peer. The following doctors must be supervised:
Provisional general (excluding interns), provisional vocational and special purpose - all doctors registered within these scopes of practice must work under supervision. For information on Council's requirements for supervision please read our publication Council's handbook (pdf).
Interns (new and NZREX graduates) - will have a nominated intern supervisor for the first 12 months working in New Zealand.
