Option 1

New Zealand or Australian medical graduates

To assess and confirm his or her competence to practise medicine within a general scope, a new graduate will be registered within a provisional general scope for up to two years with the conditions outlined below.

Conditions

The following conditions must be met during the provisional scope. The graduate must work:

  • in a New Zealand hospital or general practice accredited by the Council
  • under supervision of a registered doctor approved by the Council
  • while successfully completing requirements in the Council’s publication ‘ Education and supervision of interns ’.

Progression to general scope

Council may authorise a change of scope from a provisional general scope to a general scope once the doctor has:

  • satisfied the conditions in the provisional general scope
  • been recommended for registration in a general scope of practice by the intern supervisor
  • work no less than 10 weeks per run (any interns completing less than 10 weeks per run need to be assessed as exceptional by the intern supervisor and will be considered on a case by case basis by Council as to whether they have satisfactorily completed that run).
  • been certified in ACLS within three years of seeking to move to a general scope of practice

Runs

  • satisfactorily completed at least four runs, including:
    - one category A medical run
    - one category A surgical run
    - two other runs which may be category A or B runs
  • satisfactorily completed three consecutive runs immediately prior to applying for registration in a general scope of practice
Note: at least two of these three consecutive runs must be in different disciplines.

Note: The intern may work:

  • in rotation or relieving A or B runs
  • in Council accredited general practice runs

Note

Optimum time frame for internship - Although registration is available for up to two years, the optimum time frame in which to complete an internship in New Zealand is 12 months, and Council encourages new graduates to do this where possible.

Internships within New Zealand and Australia - Unregistered New Zealand and Australian graduates who have previously completed their internships in New Zealand or Australia will be immediately registered within a general scope, rather than a provisional general scope.
