-
Hold a primary medical degree from a university medical school listed in the WHO Directory of Medical Schools or the ECFMG FAIMER Directory, and
-
Passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2, and NZREX Clinical, within the last five
years.
To assess and confirm the doctor’s competence to practise within a general scope the doctor will be registered within a provisional general scope for up to two years with the conditions outlined below.

Conditions
|
The following conditions must be met during the provisional scope. The doctor:

must work under supervision of a registered doctor approved by the Council
-
may provide night cover during the first six months only in certain circumstances
|
Progression to general scope
|
Council may authorise a change of scope from a provisional general scope to a general scope once the doctor has:
-
satisfied the conditions in the provisional general scope
-
been recommended for registration in a general scope of practice by the intern supervisor
-
worked for 46 weeks (but intern supervisor may advise Council on level of performance, ie. if 46 weeks are not completed)
-
been certified in ACLS within three years of seeking to move to a general scope of practice.
Runs
Interns who are NZREX graduates must satisfactorily complete:
-
at least four runs, including:
- one category A medical run - one category A surgical run - two other runs which may be category A, B or C runs (NZREX graduates must not work in category D runs)
-
three consecutive runs where overall performance is of the standard expected immediately prior to applying for registration in a general scope of practice
Note: at least two of these three consecutive runs must be in different disciplines
Note: The intern may work:
-
in rotation or relieving A or B runs (after six months may do category C rotating or relieving runs)
-
in Council accredited general practice runs if they have previously worked in general practice or family medicine.
