       Registration interview

Requirements

On arrival in New Zealand, and before starting work, you must attend a registration interview. You must take the documents listed on this page to the interview and pay the required fee.

Note: All documents must be originals unless otherwise stated.

Certificate of good standing (CGS) or licensure verification from each of the registration or licensing authorities you have been registered or licensed with for the previous five years (not your employer).

These are the most important documents you must bring with you to get registered.  We recommend that you find out how to get your CGSs well before you leave to come to NZ. You will not be registered, and therefore not able to start work, without these documents.

All certificates of good standing must be dated within three months of the date you intend to start work.

Doctors coming from the UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Delhi, South Australia, British Columbia and Australian Capital Territory (ACT): you may request that your registration authority transfer the certificate information electronically to the Medical Council office in New Zealand.  If you choose this option, you may not have to produce a CGS at your registration interview.

    Other documents

    Originals of the following documents:

    • Current passport
    • Primary medical degree; or an original letter from your university medical school confirming your degree has been conferred.
    • Post-graduate qualification(s)
(for registration in vocational or special purpose scope [locum tenens])
    • Letter from Council confirming your eligibility for registration
    • Documentary evidence of name change (if applicable)
    • Official translations of your medical certificates (if the originals are not in English).

    Photocopies

    Photocopies of:
    •  personal details pages of your passport, and
    •  all other documents listed above.
These will be certified by the Council agent during your interview as true copies of the original documents and will be sent to the Council office with your final application.

    Fee

The fee for your Annual Practising Certificate (APC) is payable by cheque or credit card; not cash. The fee will vary depending on your individual circumstances. The letter you receive confirming your eligibility for registration will advise how much you have to pay.
