How to Get Restored to the Register

Introduction

The Council must restore to the register, the name of any doctor whose registration was cancelled for the following administrative reasons:

  • registration was cancelled in error (s143(3))
  • at their own request (s144(3)), or
  • did not respond to Council’s letter(s) to their registered address (s144(5)).

Note: This policy does not apply to doctors whose registration is cancelled for disciplinary reasons.

Restoration to the medical register

The doctor must be restored to the register as long as they:

  • satisfy the criteria for fitness for registration in accordance with s16 of the Act
  • are not subject to pending disciplinary proceedings under Part 4 of the Act, and
  • are not subject to an order under s101(1)(a) of the Act.

To consider an application for restoration to the register Council must be sure the applicant is competent, and will also need details of:

  • the doctor’s clinical practice, and
  • ongoing continuing professional development since they last worked in New Zealand.

Registration process

The table below explains what happens to the application

Stage

Description

1

The doctor:

  • completes application form (REG6)
  • gathers all documentation listed on the form, and
  • forwards the completed application to Council.
  • No application fee is payable.

2

Once Council receives the application, it will assess whether additional information is needed from:

  • the doctor, or
  • another source (e.g. branch advisory body).

3

Provided all requirements of s145 of the Act are satisfied, Council invites the doctor to attend a registration interview.  An annual practising certificate fee will be payable at this interview.  You will be advised of the required fee prior to the interview.

4

If this is successful, the doctor is restored to the medical register.

Note: Any annual practising certificate issued following restoration to the register may be subject to conditions on the doctor’s scope of practice.
