Stage

Description

1

Council will acknowledge your application.

2

Council will pre-assess your application.

If it seems unlikely that you will qualify for registration within a vocational scope, you will be advised and given the opportunity to withdraw your application.

3

Council will contact your three nominated referees to request a report.
Note: Your application cannot proceed until all three responses are received by Council.

4

Your application and the reports will be referred to a relevant branch advisory body (BAB) for assessment.

5

The BAB will compare your training, qualifications and experience with a New Zealand trained doctor working in the same vocational scope of practice.

If you are overseas, preliminary advice will be requested. A fee will be required.

6

The BAB will invite you to an interview. This is to obtain information on your:

  • training, assessments and examinations
  • qualifications
  • consultant experience
  • clinical practice
  • continuing professional development, peer review and audit activities
  • understanding of cultural and ethical issues as they relate to medical practice in New Zealand.

Fee: The fee must be paid before the interview.  You will be advised by Council staff when you need to pay this fee.

7

The BAB will make a recommendation to Council on the comparability of your qualifications, training and experience with a New Zealand trained doctor who is registered in the same vocational scope.

8

Council will make a decision on your application. There are three possible outcomes:

For more information on the outcomes, refer below.
