Requirements for a vocational scope of emergency medicine

Emergency
medicine

Emergency Medicine is the diagnosis and management of the acute and urgent aspects of illness and injury affecting patients of all age groups with diverse medical, surgical and behavioural disorders; it further encompasses an understanding of the development of pre-hospital emergency medical systems and the skills necessary for their development.

If you wish to apply for registration within a vocational scope of emergency medicine in New Zealand it is expected you would have training, qualifications and experience equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained emergency medicine specialist registered within a vocational scope of emergency medicine. The following checklist will enable you to assess if you are likely to be at the required level.

Emergency Medicine Training
in New Zealand

Have you had at least two years of postgraduate experience in a variety of approved posts?

Two years of basic clinical experience is required before commencing the five year advanced training programme.

Have you completed five years advanced training? This includes at least two years in an approved emergency department post and a minimum of six months in paediatrics.

Five years of advanced training are hospital based with an option for one year non-hospital. The programme includes two examinations (primary and fellowship) and presentation of a research project. The five years of advanced training must include emergency medicine posting (minimum 30 months and maximum 42 months) and paediatrics (at least six months). The remaining time spent in areas such as anaesthesia, intensive care, and medicine are highly recommended.

Have you completed a specialist exit examination?

The Part I examination must be completed by the end of the first year of advanced training and Part II is taken in the final year of advanced training.

Do you participate in a continuing medical education programme to ensure your knowledge and skills are current?

In New Zealand emergency medicine physicians registered within a vocational scope of practice are required to participate in an approved recertification programme, such as the Maintenance of Professional Standards programme run by the ACEM. This programme includes continuing medical education, audit, research and teaching.

If you cannot answer 'yes' to all the above questions and demonstrate that your training, qualifications and experience are equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained emergency medicine specialist it is unlikely you will be eligible for registration within a vocational scope of practice in New Zealand.

To see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration, return to the registration self assessment checklist and complete the checklist answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.

If you have been able to answer yes to the above questions, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process.
