General practice |
In New Zealand general practice requirements for registration within a vocational scope of practice include six years of undergraduate training and two years of hospital based training.
Doctors wishing to become general practitioners may then undertake one year of intensive general practice vocational training followed by two years of advanced vocational education while practising in a collegial relationship. Satisfactory completion of these requirements leads to Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (FRNZCGP) and registration within a vocational scope. General Practitioners are required to participate in regular professional development activities to maintain their registration.
To become a registered within a vocational scope of general practice it is expected that you would have training, qualifications and experience equivalent to or as satisfactory as a New Zealand trained general practitioner. To enable you to assess this answer the following questions. |

|

Advanced general practice vocational education consists of a minimum of two years of general practice after sitting Primex. During this time candidates undertake a series of activities to assess their competence to practise independently. FRNZCGP is awarded on completion of these requirements. |

In New Zealand vocationally general practitioners registered within a vocational scope of general practice are required to participate in the RNZCGP maintenance of professional standards programme. | |
Self assessment |
If you cannot answer 'yes' to all the above questions and demonstrate that your training, qualifications and experience are equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained general practitioner it is unlikely you will be eligible for registration within a vocational scope of general practice in New Zealand.
To see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration, return to the registration self assessment checklist and complete the checklist answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.
If you have been able to answer yes to the above questions, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process.
