Musculo-skeletal medicine |
Musculoskeletal medicine is an important and developing medical discipline concerned with patients with neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction, disorders and diseases, most of whom present with acute or chronic pain problems.
To be registered within a vocational scope of musculoskeletal medicine in New Zealand it is expected that you would have training, qualifications and experience equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained musculoskeletal physician registered within a vocational scope of practice. To enable you to assess your suitability for vocational registration, please answer the following questions: |
Checklist |

Tick if you have completed these requirements |
Musculoskeletal Medicine Training in New Zealand |
|
Have you completed at least eight years of general practice experience, or completed or partially completed vocational training, in a branch of medicine other than musculoskeletal medicine? |
A pre-requisite to admission as a Member of the New Zealand Association of Musculoskeletal Medicine is that the candidate has completed:
- a recognised general practice training programme, and passed a recognised general practice examination; or
- at least eight years of general practice; or
- holds a recognised specialist qualification, or Part 1 of a specialist qualification;
|
|
Do you have a diploma or equivalent in musculoskeletal medicine? |
New Zealand Accreditation (Certification) Programme in Musculoskeletal Medicine
The accreditation programme includes a general learning experience involving completion, over a period of two - three years, of the following modules:
- a professional report and plan
- patient satisfaction survey
- videotape review of practice skills
- patient audit
- case analysis/case appraisal
- attendance at scientific meetings
- peer group case presentation
- teaching experience in musculoskeletal medicine
|
|
Have you kept up to date with recent scientific knowledge in musculoskeletal medicine? (A diary of reading, attendance at meetings and practical skills enhancement would be required). |
In New Zealand musculoskeletal physicians registered within a vocational scope in New Zealand will be required to participate in ongoing educational and training programmes. The rapidly increasing scientific knowledge in this area means keeping up to date is very important. Attendance at scientific meetings and active participation in both academic and practical areas is encouraged. | |
Self assessment |
If you cannot answer 'yes' to all the above questions and demonstrate that your training, qualifications and experience are equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained musculoskeletal physician it is unlikely you will be eligible for registration within a vocational scope of practice in New Zealand.
To see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration, return to the registration self assessment checklist and complete the checklist answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.
If you have been able to answer yes to the above questions, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process.
