Ophthalmology

To be registered within a vocational scope of ophthalmology it is expected that you would have training, qualifications and experience equivalent to or as satisfactory as a New Zealand trained ophthalmologist registered within a vocational scope of ophthalmology. Ophthalmology Training
in New Zealand

Did you complete two years general medical training after gaining your medical degree?

A period of supervised postgraduate general medical training is required before specialist training begins. This includes one pre-registration intern year and one year in posts in general medicine and/or surgery in full time supervised positions as approved by the College.

Have you had at least three years of vocational training in ophthalmology in approved training posts?

At least three years full time supervised registrar training in approved hospitals is required.

Have you completed a fourth year in a research post or as a senior clinician?

The fourth year is a year in which trainees are expected to broaden their experience. Possibilities include a 12 month Fellowship, an overseas post, a research appointment, or a senior registrar clinical position. Trainees are expected to complete their fourth year in a different hospital from earlier training.

Have you completed a basic science ophthalmology examination?

The FRACO Part I examination in ophthalmic basic sciences (anatomy, physiology and optics) is usually taken after two years of general medical training.

Have you completed written and clinical examinations dealing with medical and surgical aspects of ophthalmology and ocular pathology?

The FRACO Part II written and clinical examinations are taken in the third or fourth year of vocational training.

Do you participate in a continuing medical education programme to ensure your knowledge and skills are current?

In New Zealand vocationally registered ophthalmologists will be required to participate in an approved recertification programme, such as the RACO Continuing Medical Education programme. This includes education, graduate meetings and courses, peer review, self assessment and self education.

Self Assessment

If you cannot answer 'yes' to all the above questions and demonstrate that your training, qualifications and experience are equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained ophthalmologist it is unlikely you will be eligible for registration within a vocational scope of practice in New Zealand.

To see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration, return to the registration self assessment checklist and complete the checklist answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.

If you have been able to answer yes to the above questions, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process.
