Palliative medicine
|
Palliative medicine is the medical care that improves the quality of life of patients and their families and whanau facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness. The focus of Palliative Medicine is the anticipation and relief of suffering of patients by means of early identification, assessment and management of their pain and other physical, psychosocial and spiritual concerns. In particular, it affirms life, regards dying as a normal process and intends to neither hasten nor postpone death.
Vocational training in New Zealand is administered by the Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine (AChPM), Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).
We do not currently have a checklist of what qualifications, training and experience is expected of applicants for this vocational scope of practice, but information on palliative medicine training in New Zealand can be found on the AChPM website at http://www.racp.edu.au/public/pallmed.htm.
If you believe that you have qualifications, training and experience in palliative medicine are likely to be equivalent to or as satisfactory as New Zealand training, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process.
To see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration, return to the registration self assessment checklist and complete the checklist answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.If you have been able to answer yes to the above questions, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process. | |
