Public
Health Medicine

Public Health Medicine is the health and care of populations. It is concerned with the promotion of health and the prevention of disease, with the assessment of a community's health needs and with the provision of services to communities in general, and to specific groups within them.

To be registered within a vocational scope of public health medicine in New Zealand it is expected that you would have training, qualifications and experience equivalent to or as satisfactory as a New Zealand trained public health medicine physician. To enable you to assess this answer the following questions. Further information to assist you complete the next section can be found on the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine website at www.afphm.org.nz.

Public Health Medicine Training in
New Zealand

Have you completed a four year postgraduate training programme in public health medicine?

Training in Public Health Medicine is of four years duration. Entry into the programme is by selection by the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM) for both Part I (basic) and Part II (advanced). Entry into Part II is not automatic for those who have completed Part I.

The overall objective of the programme is to develop a public health physician competent to work within the multidisciplinary field of public health.

There are two parts to the programme.

Have you completed basic public health medicine training and passed an appropriate examination?

Basic training comprises compulsory papers and presentation of a dissertation or thesis to successfully complete the Masters in Public Health.

Have you completed advanced training including project work?

Advanced training commences during the trainee's second year. It is a self directed, competency based programme of learning requiring trainees to undertake projects that they carry out while working in different public health contexts over 29 months.

Have you had work published and made oral presentations?

Trainees are also expected to produce work for publication, to make oral presentations at conferences and national training days, and to prepare media material and undertake other public health activities.

Do you participate in a continuing medical professional development programme to ensure your knowledge and skills are current?

In New Zealand public health medicine physicians registered within a vocational scope of practice will be required to participate in approved recertification programmes, such as the Faculty requirements for ongoing research, publications and presentations, and tracking of professional standards programme (TOPS).

Self assessment

If you cannot answer 'yes' to all the above questions and demonstrate that your training, qualifications and experience are equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained anaesthetist it is unlikely you will be eligible for registration within a vocational scope in New Zealand.

To see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration, return to the registration self assessment checklist and complete the checklist answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.

If you have been able to answer yes to the above questions, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process.
