Requirements for a vocational scope of rehabilitation medicine

Rehabilitation medicine

In New Zealand rehabilitation medicine includes the prevention and reduction of disability and handicap arising from impairments, and the management of disability from a physical, psychosocial and vocational view point. The Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM) of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians offers a comprehensive training programme in this branch of medicine.

To be registered within a vocational scope of rehabilitation medicine, it is expected that you would have training, qualifications and experience equivalent to or as satisfactory as a New Zealand trained medicine physician. To enable you to assess this answer the following questions.

Checklist

these requirements
Rehabilitation Medicine Training in New Zealand

Have you completed at least two years of basic training after obtaining your basic medical
degree?

The FAFRM requires a minimum of two years medical and surgical experience before vocational (advanced) training can commence.

Did you pass an entry examination prior to starting advanced training?

New Zealand candidates are required to pass written and clinical assessments (modules 1 and 2) during their first two years of vocational training before being permitted to proceed to the third year.

Have you completed at least four years of advanced training in rehabilitation medicine in accredited training posts?

New Zealand trainees must obtain four years of clinical experience in accredited training programmes and complete external training modules in behavioural sciences, clinical research, administration and management of rehabilitation services, and clinical neuropsychology and produce satisfactory supervisor's reports.

Did you pass an exit examination in general rehabilitation medicine?

New Zealand trainees are required to pass the AFRM Fellowship examination which has both written and clinical components before Fellowship of the Faculty is awarded.

Do you participate in a continuing medical education programme to ensure your knowledge and skills are current?

In New Zealand, rehabilitation medicine physicians registered within a vocational scope of practice will be required to participate in an approved recertification programme, such as the AFRM programmes for continuing education and quality assurance.

Self assessment

If you cannot answer 'yes' to all the above questions and demonstrate that your training, qualifications and experience are equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained rehabilitation medicine physician, it is unlikely you will be eligible for registration within a vocational scope of practice in New Zealand.

To see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration, return to the registration self assessment checklist and complete the checklist answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.

If you have been able to answer yes to the above questions, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process.
