Sexual health medicine
|
Sexual health medicine is concerned with healthy sexual relations, including freedom from sexually transmissible infections (STIs), unplanned pregnancy, coercion, and physical or psychological sexual discomfort. Its practice encompasses a wised range of factors that contribute to STIs, sexual assault, sexual dysfunction and fertility. It also promotes sexual health of the community through education, advocacy, screening and diagnostic testing. It has a clinical perspective and a public health approach. It includes the treatment of individuals and the contact tracing and treatment of their sexual partner(s).
In New Zealand the study and practice of sexual health includes core training in an accredited programme in basic principals of public health, detailed patient management of STI's including HIV, appropriate supervised training in specialised clinical practice e.g. reproductive health, psychosexual counselling, sexual abuse medicine, HIV/AIDs, colposcopy, genital dermatology etc.
To be registered within the vocational scope of sexual health medicine it is expected that you would have training, qualifications and experience equivalent to or as satisfactory as those of a New Zealand trained sexual health physician. To enable you to assess your suitability for registration within a vocational scope, please answer the following questions: |

Self Assessment
|
If you cannot answer 'yes' to all the above questions and demonstrate that your training, qualifications and experience are equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained sexual health physician it is unlikely you will be eligible for registration within a vocational scope of practice in New Zealand.
To see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration, return to the registration self assessment checklist and complete the checklist answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.
If you have been able to answer yes to the above questions, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process.
