Requirements for a vocational scope of sexual health medicine

Sexual
health medicine

Sexual health medicine is concerned with the prevention of disease and care of persons affected by diseases that are sexually transmissible. It encompasses the individual, cultural, interpersonal and microbial factors that contribute to these diseases. Sexual health medicine is also concerned with the promotion of the sexual health of the community by identifying and minimising the impact of STDs, including HIV infection, through education, behaviour change, advocacy, clinical service provision, surveillance and research.

In New Zealand the study and practice of sexual health includes core training in an accredited programme in basic principals of public health, detailed patient management of STD's including HIV, appropriate supervised training in specialised clinical practice e.g. reproductive health, psychosexual counselling, sexual abuse medicine, HIV/AIDs, colposcopy, genital dermatology etc.

To be registered within the vocational scope of sexual health medicine it is expected that you would have training, qualifications and experience equivalent to or as satisfactory as those of a New Zealand trained sexual health physician. To enable you to assess your suitability for registration within a vocational scope, please answer the following questions:

Checklist

these requirements

Have you completed a training programme of five years duration?

Five years full-time equivalent is required to complete the ACSHP training programme.

The FACSHP Part 2 oral examination is taken during the final year of training.

Do you participate in a continuing medical education programme to ensure your knowledge and skills are current?

In New Zealand sexual health physicians registered within a vocational scope of practice will be required to participate in approved recertification programmes, such as College programmes which currently includes meeting attendance, workshops and seminars, learning projects and practice related activities.

Self Assessment

If you cannot answer 'yes' to all the above questions and demonstrate that your training, qualifications and experience are equivalent to or as satisfactory as that of a New Zealand trained sexual health physician it is unlikely you will be eligible for registration within a vocational scope of practice in New Zealand.

To see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration, return to the registration self assessment checklist and complete the checklist answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.

If you have been able to answer yes to the above questions, please click here for the application form and for more information on the application process.
