To ensure that doctors are competent to work at the level of a recent graduate in New Zealand.
Back to questions
What type of examination is NZREX Clinical?
NZREX Clinical is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). This format is a well established method of assessment that is used in many universities and postgraduate medical colleges throughout the world, as well as
international registration authorities such as the Australian Medical Council, the General Medical Council (UK), the Medical Council of Canada, and the United States Medical Boards.
Back to questions
What will NZREX Clinical assess?
NZREX Clinical assesses core competencies which include the candidate’s ability to:
- undertake basic procedures, and interpret laboratory results and other clinically relevant data safely
- take a medical history
- demonstrate appropriate physical examination techniques
- manage acute serious deterioration safely and appropriately
- prioritise problems and their management
- communicate information clearly and appropriately.
Back to questions
Is NZREX Clinical suitable for new graduates?
While it is not mandatory, the Council recommends that new graduates complete a minimum of 12 months postgraduate experience as a medical practitioner in their own country, ie hold full registration, before they apply to sit NZREX Clinical. The reason for this is that recent clinical experience will help the candidates to be better prepared to sit the examination.
