Registration within a vocational scope of practice

Option A

If you hold:

- registration within a general scope of practice; and
- an approved Australasian postgraduate qualification

To apply for registration within a vocational scope complete Form VOC1.

Option B

If you hold:
- an Australian primary medical degree;  and
- an approved Australasian postgraduate qualification but;
- do not have registration in New Zealand

To apply for registration within a general and vocational scope complete:
- Checklist 1,
- Form REG1 and
- Form VOC1.

Option C

If you hold: 
- a primary medical degree from outside of New Zealand or Australia; and 
- an approved Australasian postgraduate qualification

To apply for registration within a general and vocational scope complete Form VOC2.

Option D

If you hold:
- a postgraduate qualification which is not an approved Australasian postgraduate qualification

Please use the vocational scope self assessment checklist to compare your postgraduate qualifications, training and experience to that of a New Zealand trained doctor to see whether they are likely to be recognised for registration in New Zealand. 

Use Form VOC3 to apply for assessment for registration if you fit the criteria in the checklist or click here for further information on the application process.

Please note that an application for registration within a vocational scope may take 4-6 months to process. 

If you do not fit the criteria, you will need to return to the registration self assessment checklist and see if you meet the requirements for another pathway to registration by completing the checklist and answering no to the question “are you a qualified specialist or do you have a postgraduate qualification“.


Option E - Locum tenens specialist post

If you hold:
- an approved postgraduate qualification; and 
- are visiting New Zealand to work in a specialist position for up to six months
