Comparable Health System pathway

The requirements for this option

To be eligible to apply for this pathway you must:

  • hold a primary medical degree from a university medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and
  • have worked for 33 months (for at least 30 hours per week) in the 48 months prior to your application within a comparable health system in the same area of medicine and same level offered in New Zealand, and
  • hold full (or general) registration in the comparable health system in which you meet the above active clinical practice requirements, and
  • satisfy Council’s English language requirements

Applying for registration

The conditions for this option

The conditions of a provisional general scope specify that you must:

  • work in a position we have approved
  • work in a New Zealand hospital, general practice, educational institution or other organisation we have approved work under the supervision of a registered doctor we have approved
  • work in a position for which you have appropriate experience.

Note: The information provided in your curriculum vitae will be thoroughly checked to ensure the proposed position is suitable.

Progression to a general scope

We may authorise you to change to a general scope once you have:

  • satisfied the provisional general scope conditions
  • completed one year working within a provisional general scope
  • been recommended by your supervisor
  • received satisfactory reports for the three clinical attachments completed (or nine months worked) immediately prior to applying for registration within a general scope.

Note: We may put conditions on your general scope if we consider this necessary in the interests of public health and safety. To avoid conditions on your general scope you will need to complete 6 months in medicine and 6 months in surgery; or complete at least 6 months in general practice, while working under a provisional general scope.
