Introduction:
The Medical Council of New Zealand (the Council) is consulting with you and other interested parties on the proposed Standards for assessment and accreditation of vocational medical training and recertification programmes for New Zealand colleges. The Council is seeking your feedback on the proposed changes to these standards. The new standards are intended to be in place by 1 July 2019 and will apply to all accreditation assessments from 1 July 2020.

Aligning current standards:
The Council is committed to ensuring that vocational training and recertification programmes are of a high standard to assure doctors receive quality training. Quality training of doctors is essential as it contributes directly to our primary purpose to protect the public by ensuring doctors are providing high quality care to patients.

The intent of this review is to strengthen the current standards for New Zealand training organisations by aligning them more closely with the common accreditation standards and process that the Council uses for those training organisations that provide programmes in both Australia and New Zealand.

In 2015, the Australian Medical Council (AMC) reviewed its standards and published the Standards for assessment and accreditation of Specialist medical education programmes and continuing professional development programmes by the Australian Medical Council (2015).

In 2016, Council updated its Additional criteria for Assessment of Specialist Medical Training and Recertification Programmes (2016). At this time, Council expressed its intent to align its accreditation standards and processes for vocational medical training and recertification programmes more closely with those of the AMC.

The proposed standards are based on the 2015 AMC standards but have been changed where appropriate to fit the New Zealand context.
