Advice to patients around doctors' use of surgical mesh

What can we do?

Our role is to ensure public health and safety. When we receive a notification about a doctor’s competence, one of the options available to us is to consider whether or not an assessment of a doctor’s performance is necessary.  We can consider this at the same time the Health and Disability Commissioner is reviewing any notification it has received. Our role is to look at the doctor’s overall competence to ensure that they are practising safely. More information is available here about our notification process.

What we cannot do

We cannot:

  • Order the doctor give you a refund or compensation
  • Tell a doctor to give you medication or provide you with treatment
  • Help you bring legal proceedings against anybody
  • Make the doctor apologise to you

Who do I speak to if I have concerns about my treatment?

We recommend contacting your GP in the first instance if you are concerned about the care or treatment that has been provided to you so that they can review the care provided to you.

The Health and Disability Commissioner looks after all notifications about the care and treatment that has been provided to you. The Health and Disability Commissioner can be contacted on 0800 11 22 33 and more information about the Health and Disability Commissioner can be found here .

You can speak to us and we can help you
