English language requirements - NZREX

Applicants for registration as well as candidates applying for the New Zealand Registration Examination (NZREX Clinical) must satisfy Council that they are able to comprehend and communicate effectively in English in the medical workplace, as one of the prerequisites for registration. This policy sets out the specific requirements that must be met. -
Validity time for prerequisite examinations

If you want to undertake NZREX Clinical, you need to have passed a prerequisite examination within the previous 5 years. We consider this the maximum length of time your skills can stay current without needing to be reassessed. -
NZREX Clinical Examination Rules

You must agree to these rules before you can take the examination. If you break these rules you will fail the examination and there may be consequences for any future application for registration. -

Policy on refunds for candidates withdrawing from New Zealand registration examination

You can withdraw from the examination and get a refund of your examination fee in certain circumstances. You will need to give us sufficient notice so that another candidate has an opportunity to sit the examination. -
Policy on NZREX Critical Incidents

We will record a critical incident on your file if you exhibit any behaviour during the examination that represents a significant breach of acceptable professional standards or ethical boundaries. Our publication Good Medical Practice defines what is a critical incident. -
Policy on examiners raising serious concerns about candidate performance

If your performance during an examination falls below minimal expected levels of clinical or professional behaviour, an assessor may alert the Examinations Director and raise a serious concern. This can impact your result in the examination. -
Pass and fail criteria

Our NZREX Clinical examination is designed to ensure you are competent to be registered in New Zeaand within a provisional general scope. The examination is a test of overall clinical competence. It does not include "stand alone" examinations of individual disciplines and there are no partial passes. -
Feedback to unsuccessful candidates

Passport photos for candidates

You need to submit passport photos in order to undertake our NZREX examination. These help us ensure that the correct candidate is at the examination. This policy outlines the requirements for the passport photos we need. -
Taiwanese medical schools

We recognise Taiwanese medical schools so that graduates from these schools have the opportunity to undertake NZREX Clinical. We must ensure we only register fully qualified doctors. However, the exclusion of Taiwanese medical schools from WDOMS is due to political factors and not the standard of those schools. The ECFMG has approved graduates of these schools to undertake the prerequisite examination - USMLE Steps 1 and 2.
