Consultation – Regulating doctors performing cosmetic procedures
Council is working to improve patient safety by strengthening our approach to the regulation of doctors performing cosmetic procedures.
Your feedback will inform this work.
We must ensure the way we regulate is responsive to evolving challenges, proportionate to risk of harm, and transparent to the profession and the public.
Strengthened regulation to improve patient safety
Currently, our Statement on cosmetic procedures sets out expected standards of practice, and contains criteria for which doctors can perform cosmetic procedures. We propose presenting this information in two documents, to give greater clarity for the profession, better transparency for the public, and to improve patient safety.
We seek your feedback on the proposals set out in the two documents:
- The draft Policy on the training and expertise [PDF, 218 KB] necessary for doctors to safely perform cosmetic procedures
- The draft revised Statement [PDF, 270 KB]on doctors performing cosmetic procedures.
Our consultation paper [PDF, 406 KB] explains the rationale behind the proposals. We will consider your feedback before any decisions are made, and any changes will be introduced with careful planning, appropriate notice, and a collaborative approach.
Please provide your feedback by completing this survey .
Alternatively, you can email your responses and any other feedback to policy@mcnz.org.nz.
We look forward to receiving your feedback. The consultation closes on Wednesday 24 September 2025.
