Survey to inform the review of Good Medical Practice – now open

Council is in the early stages of reviewing Good Medical Practice: our core statement that sets out the principles that define good medical practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We are conducting a survey of doctors and a representative group of the public, to help identify how Good Medical Practice is currently used, which elements are most useful, and what could be improved.

Your feedback will guide the direction of the review. To complete the survey, follow this link .

An evidence-based review

Council’s review of Good Medical Practice will take a more comprehensive approach than our usual statement reviews.

We want to ensure that our review of Good Medical Practice is evidence-based, and that it is informed by input from the profession from the outset. We want to understand how doctors use Good Medical Practice, to ensure the final product is fit for purpose.

It is important to ensure the content of Good Medical Practice keeps pace with developments in medical practice and wider society, so we can be confident that it is up to date and representative of modern practice.

Comprehensive approach

We have also convened an external advisory group to support this work. Members include doctors and representatives of relevant organisations including universities and doctor unions.

This survey is to inform the early stages of the review, and does not replace consultation. We will consult on a revised draft of Good Medical Practice in due course, and we’d like to hear your feedback then too. A response to this early survey does not affect your opportunity to contribute to consultation later in the process.

The survey will be open until Friday 15 August 2025
