PAs will always work under the supervision of a medical doctor. This means a supervising doctor must always be available for the PA to seek advice from.

As part of the initial application to be a PA registered in the Provisional PA scope of practice, the employer will need to provide a job offer and proposed supervision plan for the PA. These will be considered by Council and if appropriate, the application will be approved.

The employer will also have responsibilities for ensuring that the PA is supervised and introduced to working in Aotearoa New Zealand. This includes the employer completing a supervision plan that gets approved by the Council.

Once that has all been completed and the Council has received satisfactory reports from the supervisor, the PA will be able to apply to move from registration in the Provisional PA scope of practice to registration in the General PA scope of practice – but even then, the PA will still work under supervision.

We have designed a supervision framework that sets out expectations for supervision in each scope of practice.
