Guidance on using artificial intelligence in patient care
Council has published guidance to support doctors using artificial intelligence (AI) in patient care.
AI technology is increasingly present in healthcare settings. AI may assist with tasks such as clinical documentation, information analysis and decision support. They do not replace professional judgement. Doctors remain responsible for the care they provide.
To support ethical and responsible use of AI, Council has published guidance outlining what doctors should consider. For example:
- being satisfied that the AI tool is safe and suitable for the patient
- that the doctor remains responsible for all their clinical decisions and actions
- obtaining informed consent for the use of AI in some specific situations
- the potential for bias and impact on equitable health outcomes
- not using AI tools in ways that impersonate a doctor
- checking that there are adequate privacy and data security safeguards in place.
The guidance reflects feedback received during consultation and supports Council’s statutory role of protecting the health and safety of the public.
