Doctors who want to practise in New Zealand

All doctors wanting to practise medicine in New Zealand must first register with us. We ensure doctors are fit to practise and meet our standards, before they can register.

First time working in New Zealand

  • Self assessment

The self assessment tool is the best place to start to determine your registration options. Click here to do the self assessment, it only takes a few minutes.

  • How long does it take to get registered?

It depends on the type of registration applied for. Do the self assessment first and then click here to see how long each type usually takes.

  • Restoration to the Medical Register

If you have practised as a doctor in New Zealand before, and you want to begin practising again in New Zealand, but your name is no longer on the register, then get restored to the register.

  • Overseas practising certificates or licences

If you worked as a doctor whilst away from New Zealand, you must produce a certificate of good standing (CGS) from each relevant medical board you were registered or licensed with in the last 5 years. Click here to find out more.
