Recertification for doctors on a vocational scope of practice
If you hold a vocational scope you must participate in the recertification programme offered by the medical college responsible for your area of vocational practice.
Recertification programmes
Recertification programme providers – in most cases in New Zealand these are the specialist medical colleges – develop, manage and administer recertification programmes for each vocational area of medicine. The Medical Council sets the requirements for these programmes and accredits them against the relevant standards.
Recertification programmes support doctors to maintain their competence, take responsibility for their performance and to stay current in their practice. If you hold a vocational registration you must participate in and satisfy all the requirements of the recertification programme offered by the medical college responsible for your area of vocational practice.
If you are registered and working in more than one vocational scope of practice, check with your respective colleges on what you are required to do.
Strengthened recertification requirements
The Medical Council has undertaken work to strengthen recertification requirements for vocationally registered doctors in New Zealand. The requirements build on existing systems and put emphasis on recertification activities that relate to the actual work doctors do and that are most likely to improve practice.
Accredited recertification programme providers are expected to work towards these requirements, with implementation by 1 July 2022.
