Recognition and accreditation of vocational scopes of practice

The Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (HPCAA) requires us to prescribe the scopes of practice which doctors are permitted to perform. We have recognised 35 vocational scopes of practice.

To be recognised, any new scope needs to have a/an:

  • defined body of knowledge and practice
  • recognised health need
  • group of doctors who are capable of providing an appropriate professional environment
  • acceptable training programme with a nationally recognised qualification
  • acceptable recertification programme
  • national organisation with the authority to advise us on vocational scopes
  • initial and ongoing assessment by us.

All applications for new vocational scopes of practice and associated training programmes in New Zealand are required to meet the standards for recognition. The standards and information relating to the two stage process can be accessed below.
