Recertification programmes
Recertification programmes apply to:
- specialist doctors within a vocational scope of practice, including FRNZCGP general practice doctors
- general scope doctors (except those in PGY2 who are completing the intern training programme).
All doctors in New Zealand must participate in ongoing education in order to be eligible to renew their practising certificate every year. The Medical Council accredits the Continual Professional Development (CPD) programmes offered by the medical colleges and audits compliance by doctors.
General scope recertification
All doctors registered in a general scope of practice, (except those in PGY2, a vocational training programme, those limited to non-clinical practice, and those who are also registered in a vocational scope of practice), are required to join the Inpractice recertification programme that has been approved by the Council.
Inpractice recertification + professional development
For more information about this programme, please visit www.inpractice.org.nz
Vocational scope recertification
Vocational training of specialists is the responsibility of the specialist medical colleges. Each medical college manages the training and recertification programmes for particular vocational areas of medicine. These programmes are accredited by the Medical Council against the relevant standards and are managed and administered by the specialist colleges. Specialist qualifications in New Zealand are fellowships of the specialist colleges gained after meeting the relevant training and examination requirements.
Every doctor who holds vocational registration (whether through Fellowship of the relevant NZ/Australasian postgraduate qualification, or through recognition of their international postgraduate qualifications), must recertify by being enrolled with and participating in the CPD programme offered by the medical college responsible for the area of vocational practice that the doctor practises in.
Information about recertification programmes for each vocational scope/branch of medicine/specialisation is available here.
