Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) requirements
Applying for general scope of practice at the end of PGY1
To be eligible to apply for registration within a general scope of practice at the end of PGY1, an intern must:
- Satisfactorily complete four accredited clinical attachments.
- Substantively attain the learning outcomes outlined in the 14 learning activities of the curriculum.
- Meet the Council's requirements for advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), as set in our policy on the ACLS requirement for PGY1 interns.
- Develop a satisfactory PDP for PGY2.
- Be granted a recommendation for registration in a general scope of practice by a Council approved Advisory Panel.
ACLS requirement
To qualify for registration in the General scope of practice, a PGY1 intern must hold ACLS certification which is less than 18 months old, at the time they apply for registration in the General scope.
To obtain certification, PGY1 interns must complete either the NZRC CORE Advanced certification or an alternative course which is at the standard of NZRC CORE Advanced.
ACLS certification must be completed while registered and practising in the Provisional General scope of practice, as a PGY1 intern.
The requirements for alternative courses are set out in Council's policy on the ACLS requirement for PGY1 interns.

The Advisory Panel
When interns have satisfactorily completed four clinical attachments, the training provider’s approved Advisory Panel meets to discuss the overall performance of each PGY1 intern. The panel comprises four members appointed by the training provider:
- the CMO or their delegate who will chair the panel
- the intern’s prevocational educational supervisor
- a second prevocational educational supervisor
- a lay person.
The Advisory Panel reviews the intern’s ePort and decides whether the doctor has met the required standard to be recommended for registration in the General scope of practice.
